EXPLANATION
Livestock Diseases, Prevention & Control
- Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD / Khurpaka-Muhpaka) is an acute, highly contagious transboundary viral disease of cloven-hoofed domestic animals (cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pigs).
- It is caused by an Aphthovirus belonging to the family Picornaviridae, which has 7 distinct immunological serotypes: O, A, C, SAT-1, SAT-2, SAT-3, and Asia-1.
- In India, serotype 'O' is responsible for more than 80% of clinical outbreaks, followed by Asia-1 and A.
- Characterized by vesicular eruptions on the tongue, dental pad, gums, interdigital clefts, and coronary band. Thus, FMD is Viral (Option 3).
