EXPLANATION
- Phosphorus is prone to severe fixation in soils — forming insoluble Fe/Al phosphates in acid soils and insoluble Ca phosphates in alkaline/calcareous soils, resulting in low recovery (15-20%).
- Soil organic matter decreases phosphorus fixation via multiple mechanisms: (1) organic anions (citrate, oxalate, humate) compete with phosphate ions for adsorption sites on clay and oxide surfaces; (2) humic compounds form stable chelates with Fe, Al, and Ca, preventing them from reacting with orthophosphate.
- The mineralization of organic matter also produces carbonic acid, which solubilizes native mineral phosphates.
- Consequently, addition of FYM or compost significantly enhances phosphorus availability to crops.
