  • Henrik Lundegårdh (1950) proposed the Cytochrome Pump Theory (also called Anion Respiration Theory).
  • He demonstrated that when plant roots are transferred from water to a salt solution, the rate of respiration increases significantly (salt respiration). This respiration rate is directly correlated with anion absorption via the cytochrome electron transport chain.
