Insects are incapable of synthesizing water-soluble B-complex vitamins (including thiamine, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, pyridoxine, pantothenic acid, folic acid, and biotin) and strictly require them in their diet or from symbiotic gut microflora for normal growth, metamorphosis, and reproduction. Fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, and K are generally not essential for most insects.
