Relationship between plant population and yield in fodder crops is :
- As conceptualized by C. M. Donald (1951) and Willey & Heath (1969), the relationship between crop yield and plant density falls into two distinct physiological patterns:
- Asymptotic relationship: When the harvestable economic product is total vegetative dry matter or green biomass (e.g., fodder crops, hay, silage, tobacco, sugarcane), yield increases rapidly at first and then flattens out to a plateau (asymptote), where further increases in plant population do not reduce yield.
- Parabolic relationship: When the economic yield consists of reproductive or storage organs (e.g., grain cereals, pulses, oilseeds, cotton), yield increases to an optimum density and then declines due to severe interplant reproductive competition.
- Therefore, in fodder crops, the relationship is asymptotic (Option 1).
