Q.112
Given below are two statements
Statement (I) : During conjugation a physical contact between cells are created
Statement (II) : During transduction, the donor is most often dead.
In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below.
- Statement (I) is Correct: Bacterial conjugation is a parasexual mechanism of horizontal gene transfer that strictly requires direct, physical cell-to-cell contact between a donor bacterium ($F^+$ or $Hfr$) and a recipient bacterium ($F^-$) via a specialized conjugative pilus (sex pilus).
- Statement (II) is Correct: Transduction is mediated by bacteriophages. During the lytic phase of generalized or specialized transduction, the donor bacterium is infected, its chromosome is fragmented, and the cell is lysed and killed (dead) to release progeny bacteriophages containing packaged bacterial donor DNA.
- Conclusion: Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are correct (Option 1).
