Q.22

ICAR AIEEA PG Agronomy 09 July 2023 (Shift 1) Paper (Q.15)

MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

During translocation of photosynthates in plants from source to sink :

The loading of photosynthates at source is by active transport and unloading at the sink is by passive transport The loading of photosynthates at source is by passive transport and unloading at the sink is by active transport Both loading at the source and unloading at the sink are by active transport Both loading at the source and unloading at the sink are by passive transport

According to Ernst Münch's Pressure-Flow Hypothesis, translocation of sucrose occurs along hydrostatic pressure gradients generated by osmotic changes in the phloem sieve tubes.
Phloem loading at source: Sucrose is moved into sieve elements against steep chemical and electrical gradients via proton-sucrose symporters ($H^+/\text{sucrose}$ symport driven by $H^+$-ATPase), requiring metabolic energy (Active transport).
Phloem unloading at growing sinks: Transport from sieve tubes into actively metabolizing or storage sink cells also utilizes energy-dependent active processes across membrane barriers (Active transport).
Hence, both loading at the source and unloading at the sink are driven by active transport mechanisms (Option 3).

MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

Select out of the following the correct statement regarding cell membrane :

Na and K ions move across cell membrane by passive transport Na Proteins make up 60 to 70% of the cell membrane Fluid mosaic model of cell membrane was proposed by Singer and Nicolson Lipids are arranged in a bilayer with polar heads towards the inner part

Statement 3 is correct: The widely accepted Fluid Mosaic Model of biological membranes was proposed by S.J. Singer and G.L. Nicolson in 1972, describing a quasi-fluid lipid bilayer with embedded protein 'icebergs'.
Statement 1 is incorrect: Sodium ($Na^+$) and Potassium ($K^+$) ions move across cell membranes primarily via active transport ($Na^+/K^+$ ATPase pump).
Statement 2 is incorrect: In typical cell membranes (e.g. human RBC), proteins comprise approximately $52\%$ and lipids comprise $40\%$, not $60–70\%$.
Statement 4 is incorrect: In phospholipid bilayers, the hydrophilic polar heads face outward toward the aqueous environment, while hydrophobic tails are directed inward.

Q.25

MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

Photorespiration does not take place in C4 plants because such plants :

Do not contain fixation enzyme RUBISCO Have cells that are impermeable to oxygen Have mechanism that increases the concentration of CO2 at the enzyme site Cells do not allow oxygen to accumulate in them

C4 plants possess specialized Kranz anatomy with dimorphic chloroplasts divided between mesophyll cells and bundle sheath cells.
Primary carbon fixation is performed by PEP carboxylase in mesophyll cells to form 4-carbon organic acids (malate/aspartate), which are shuttled into bundle sheath cells.
Decarboxylation inside bundle sheath cells releases a high concentration of $CO_2$ directly around Rubisco, saturating the enzyme and completely overcoming oxygenase activity.
Thus, photorespiration is negligible because of the $CO_2$-concentrating pump mechanism operating at the enzyme site (Option 3).
