Statement Based +4 −1

Given below are two statements

Statement I : The combined effect of competition and allelopathy where growth of weeds or crop or both is reduced is called allelomediation.

Statement II : Allelopathy depends on addition of chemical compounds while competition involves removal of an essential factor from the environment.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

Both Statement I and Statement II are true कथन I और कथन II दोनों सत्य हैं Both Statement I and Statement II are false कथन I और कथन II दोनों असत्य हैं Statement I is true but Statement II is false कथन I सत्य है लेकिन कथन II असत्य है Statement I is false but Statement II is true कथन I असत्य है लेकिन कथन II सत्य है

Statement I is false: The combined effect of competition (resource depletion) and allelopathy (biochemical release) that reduces plant growth was termed 'Interference' by C.H. Muller (1969), not 'allelomediation'.
Statement II is true: As classically formulated by Muller (1969) and Rice (1984):
Allelopathy involves the addition of chemical biomolecules (allelochemicals: phenolics, terpenoids, alkaloids) into the environment that inhibit neighbor growth.
Competition involves the removal / depletion of essential finite resources (water, nutrients, solar radiation, space) from the shared environment.
Therefore, Statement I is false but Statement II is true, confirming Option 4.

Q.2

MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

The term allelopathy was coined by :

The term allelopathy was coined in 1937 by Austrian plant physiologist Hans Molisch in his book Der Einfluss einer Pflanze auf die andere - Allelopathie (The Influence of One Plant on Another - Allelopathy).
It is derived from two Greek words: allelon (mutual/each other) and pathos (harm/suffering), defining chemical interactions (both inhibitory and stimulatory) mediated by secondary metabolites released into the environment.
John L. Harper pioneered plant population biology and competition studies.
Daniel I. Arnon established the criteria of essentiality of plant nutrients (1939) and chloroplast photophosphorylation (1954).
Hence, Molisch coined the term allelopathy (Option 3).

Q.3

ICAR AIEEA PG Agronomy 14 July 2023 (Shift 1) Paper (Q.58)

Statement Based +4 −1

Given below are two statements

Statement (I) : Increasing fertilizer rates to maintain yields in weedy fields can be a waste of resources.

Statement (II) : Increasing fertilizer rates to give competitive advantage on already weeded plots may sustain the effect of weeding.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are correct कथन (I) और कथन (II) दोनों सही हैं Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are incorrect कथन (I) और कथन (II) दोनों गलत हैं Statement (I) is correct but Statement (II) is incorrect कथन (I) सही है लेकिन कथन (II) गलत है Statement (I) is incorrect but Statement (II) is correct कथन (I) गलत है लेकिन कथन (II) सही है

Interactions between weed competition and fertilization:

Statement (I) is correct: Weeds generally have higher nutrient absorption capacity and growth rates than crop plants; applying excess fertilizer in weedy fields preferentially feeds the weeds and leads to severe crop suppression and nutrient waste.
Statement (II) is correct: Once weeds are eliminated by timely hand-weeding or herbicidal treatment, applying optimal booster fertilizers allows the crop to rapidly establish canopy closure, suppressing newly emerging weed flushes and sustaining weed-free benefits.
