MCQ (Single Correct)

The physical process of soil degradation is :

Soil degradation is classified by FAO into physical, chemical, and biological mechanisms:
Physical degradation: Soil erosion (by water or wind), structural breakdown, surface crusting, subsoil compaction, and topsoil loss/depletion.
Chemical degradation: Acidification, salinization, sodification, nutrient fertility imbalance, and chemical toxicity.
Biological degradation: Organic matter decline, loss of soil biodiversity, and decline in biomass carbon.
Therefore, Erosion and depletion represents the physical degradation process (Option 3).

MCQ (Single Correct)

Given below are two statements

Statement (I) : A key component of conservation agriculture is soil tillage connected to zero tillage, reduced tillage and ridge tillage.

Statement (II) : Improved crop yields are one benefit of the innovation known as zero tillage especially in rice-wheat system due to timely seeding of wheat.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below :

Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are true कथन (I) और कथन (II) दोनों सही हैं Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are false कथन (I) और कथन (II) दोनों गलत हैं Statement (I) is true but Statement (II) is false कथन (I) सही है लेकिन कथन (II) गलत है Statement (I) is false but Statement (II) is true कथन (I) गलत है लेकिन कथन (II) सही है

Statement (I) is true: The first fundamental pillar of Conservation Agriculture (CA) is minimum mechanical soil disturbance, which encompasses zero tillage (no-till), reduced/minimum tillage, and strip/ridge tillage to conserve soil structure and reduce erosion.
Statement (II) is true: In the Indo-Gangetic Plains, zero-tillage wheat direct-seeded into rice stubble saves 10–15 days typically lost to repeated plowing after paddy harvest. This guarantees timely planting before November 20th, avoiding terminal heat stress in March and consistently yielding higher grain harvest.
Since both statements are technically sound and widely verified in agronomic field trials, Option 1 is correct.
Hence, Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are true.

MCQ (Single Correct)

Biochar produced by incomplete combustion of biological materials is rich in :

Biochar is a fine-grained, highly porous charcoal produced by the thermal decomposition of biomass in an oxygen-limited environment (pyrolysis / incomplete combustion).
The chemical composition of biochar is dominated overwhelmingly by stable, aromatic recalcitrant carbon, typically comprising 65% to 85% carbon by dry weight.
Other elements such as nitrogen, phosphorus, sulphur, hydrogen, and oxygen are volatilized during thermochemical conversion, leaving carbon as the predominant constituent.
Because of its immense carbon density and resistance to microbial decomposition, biochar is prized globally as a carbon sequestration soil amendment.
Thus, biochar is rich in Carbon (Option 4).

MCQ (Single Correct)

'Tree Crops: A Permanent Agriculture' is written by :

Tree Crops: A Permanent Agriculture is a pioneering, world-renowned classic published in 1929 by American economic geographer Joseph Russell Smith (J. Russell Smith) (1874–1966) of Columbia University.
In this visionary work, Smith advocated for cultivating perennial woody tree crops (chestnut, walnut, carob, oak) on steep, erosion-prone lands instead of annual tillage, establishing the foundational principles of modern agroforestry, contour planting, and permaculture.
Charles C. Harrison, Edgar F. Smith, and Josiah H. Penniman were provosts of the University of Pennsylvania unrelated to this work.
Therefore, the author is J. Russell Smith (Option 4).

1979-80 1979-80 1989-90 1989-90 1994-95 1994-95 1997-98 1997-98

The Integrated Wasteland Development Programme (IWDP) was officially launched by the Government of India during 1989–90 under the National Wasteland Development Board (Ministry of Environment and Forests, later transferred to Department of Land Resources, Ministry of Rural Development in 1992).
The scheme aimed at developing non-forest wastelands on a micro-watershed basis through people's participation, soil and water conservation, afforestation, and pasture development.
In 2009–10, IWDP along with DPAP and DDP was integrated into the Integrated Watershed Management Programme (IWMP), now component of PMKSY (WDC).
Thus, IWDP had been under implementation since 1989–90 (Option 2).
