Weed Management

• Ephemeral weeds are plants with an exceptionally short life cycle (often 2 to 4 weeks) that quickly germinate, flower, seed, and mature during brief periods of favorable soil moisture, producing multiple generations in a single season.
• Phyllanthus niruri (syn. Phyllanthus amarus, 'Hazar-dana') is an ephemeral weed that rapidly completes its vegetative and reproductive stages within a very short span during early monsoon breaks.
• Phalaris minor and Medicago denticulata are typical winter season (Rabi) annuals that require several months to complete their full life cycles.
• Hence, Phyllanthus niruri is the correct answer (Option 4).

• Ageratum species (e.g., Ageratum conyzoides and A. houstonianum, goatweed) are facultative weeds with high ecological plasticity, thriving aggressively in arable cropped lands (maize, rice, pulses, tea, coffee, orchards) as well as non-cropped lands (wastelands, roadsides, canal banks).
• Urena lobata is primarily a weed of perennial plantation borders and forest margins.
• Urtica dioica (stinging nettle) and Solanum xanthocarpum (wild eggplant / yellow-berried nightshade) are primarily non-crop ruderal weeds of waste places, bunds, and uncultivated lands.
• Thus, Ageratum sp. is widely classified as a major weed of both cropped and non-cropped environments (Option 3).

Morphological adaptations for epizoochory in weeds:

• Xanthium strumarium (Cocklebur): Fruits covered with stiff hooked prickles that latch onto animal fur and human clothing -> (IV).
• Tribulus terrestris (Puncture vine / Gokhru): Hard woody schizocarps armed with sharp rigid spines that pierce feet or tyres -> (I).
• Achyranthes aspera (Chirchita / Chaff flower): Inflorescence possesses stiff, spiny-pointed scarious bracteoles that easily detach onto passing animals -> (II).
• Boerhavia repens / diffusa (Punarnava): Small clavate anthocarps covered in viscid, sticky glandular hairs -> (III).

Objectionable weed status of Argemone mexicana:

• Argemone mexicana (Mexican prickly poppy / Satyanashi) is an objectionable weed of Mustard and Rapeseed (Brassica spp.).
• Its dark brown, pitted spherical seeds resemble mustard seeds and are extremely difficult to separate mechanically.
• Admixture of argemone oil with edible mustard oil causes toxicity due to sanguinarine and dihydrosanguinarine, leading to epidemic dropsy and cardiac failure in humans.
