MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

Shared nest and cooperative brood care is found in:

Degrees of sociality in insects as defined by Michener and E.O. Wilson:

Eusocial insects (e.g. honeybees, ants, termites): Display all three core criteria of advanced social organization: (1) Shared nest with cooperative brood care, (2) Reproductive division of labor into fertile and sterile castes, and (3) Overlapping of at least two generations of life stages capable of contributing to colony labor.
Quasisocial: Shared nest and cooperative brood care among members of the same generation without reproductive division of labor.
Semisocial: Shared nest, cooperative brood care, and reproductive division of labor, but without overlapping generations.
Subsocial: Parents provide care to their own offspring for a limited period.

Hence, fully cooperative brood care in communal shared nests is the hallmark of Eusocial insects.
