The C-value paradox (or C-value enigma) describes the lack of correlation between the total haploid DNA content ($C$-value) of a eukaryote and its phenotypic, anatomical, or developmental complexity. For instance, some amoebae, lungfishes, and lilies possess genomes dozens of times larger than the human genome. This paradox is resolved by the discovery that the vast majority of variation in eukaryotic genome size is driven by differential abundance of non-coding DNA, specifically repetitive DNA, transposable elements (retrotransposons), heterochromatin, and intervening introns, rather than differences in the number of protein-coding genes.
