Q.4
ICAR AIEEA PG Plant Sciences 09 July 2023 (Shift 1) Paper (Q.99)
Assertion & Reason +4 −1

Given below are two statements, one is labeled as

Assertion (A) : and the other is labeled as Reason (R):
Assertion (A) : The seeds of wild-type soybean (Glycine soja) live longer than the seeds of cultivated type (Glycine max L.).
Reason (R) : The wild-type soybean (Glycine soja) seeds are small, black, and have an impermeable seed coat with very little content of oil that might enhance the seed longevity.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Assertion (A) is correct: Seeds of cultivated soybean (Glycine max) exhibit notoriously poor storage potential (losing viability within a single season under tropical ambient conditions), whereas seeds of its wild ancestor (Glycine soja) maintain viability for many years.
Reason (R) is correct: In Glycine soja, seeds are protected by a thick, melanin-pigmented, water-impermeable hard seed coat that bars moisture fluctuation and fungal invasion. Furthermore, wild seeds contain significantly lower lipid (oil) content (~8-10% compared to ~20% in G. max), drastically curtailing free-radical oxidative lipid peroxidation, the primary biochemical culprit in soybean seed deterioration.
Because these physical and chemical adaptations explain the superior storability, (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
