In a two-sample independent t-test with pooled variance:
$$t = \frac{\bar{X}_1 - \bar{X}_2}{s_p \sqrt{\frac{1}{n_1} + \frac{1}{n_2}}}$$Where the pooled sample variance $s_p^2$ is estimated using sums of squares from both samples:
$$s_p^2 = \frac{(n_1 - 1)s_1^2 + (n_2 - 1)s_2^2}{n_1 + n_2 - 2}$$Because two sample means (parameters) are estimated, 2 degrees of freedom are lost from the total $(n_1 + n_2)$ observations, leaving $(n_1 + n_2 - 2)$ degrees of freedom.
