MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

Which of the following weed is an example of 'semi-parasitic weed'?

Parasitic angiosperms are divided into total (holoparasites) and partial/semi (hemiparasites) parasites depending on whether they contain chlorophyll.
Striga species (witchweed) are semi-root parasites that attach to the roots of host cereals (sorghum, maize, pearl millet) via haustoria; they have green leaves and conduct partial photosynthesis but draw water and minerals from the host.
Cuscuta (dodder) is a total stem parasite devoid of chlorophyll.
Orobanche (broomrape) is a total root parasite, and Rafflesia is an endoparasite. Thus, Striga represents a semi-parasitic weed.

Hence, the correct answer is Striga (Option 4).

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

The condition where crops are unable to absorb water from soil even when water is available is called -

Soil salinity involves high concentrations of soluble salts (Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO4^2-) in the root zone soil solution.
High solute concentration increases the osmotic pressure of the soil solution, which mathematically corresponds to a lower (more negative) osmotic potential (Ψs).
When the osmotic potential of the soil solution becomes lower than that of the root cells, plant roots are unable to extract water along the water potential gradient, inducing 'physiological drought' or osmotic stress even in moist soil.
RPSC officially keyed Option 3 designating the osmotic barrier to water absorption.

Hence, the correct option is (C).

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

The number of wheat growing zones in India is -

4 4 15 15 6 6 10 10

The Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (ICAR-IIWBR, Karnal) categorizes India's wheat-growing tracts into six distinct agro-ecological mega-zones.
The 6 wheat zones are: 1. Northern Hills Zone (NHZ), 2. North Western Plains Zone (NWPZ), 3. North Eastern Plains Zone (NEPZ), 4. Central Zone (CZ), 5. Peninsular Zone (PZ), and 6. Southern Hills Zone (SHZ).
NWPZ (Punjab, Haryana, Western UP, Rajasthan) represents the primary wheat bowl of India with highest productivity.
Therefore, the total number of wheat-growing zones in India is 6.

Hence, the correct number of zones is 6 (Option 3).

RPSC Agriculture Research Officer (Agronomy) - 2024

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

Which of the following statement is true regarding the effectiveness of Zn sources?

Inorganic Zn is more effective than chelated Zn at the same rate. Soil applied Zn always outperforms foliar applied Zn. Zn chelates are more effective than inorganic Zn at similar application rates. Zn EDTA is inexpensive and widely used.

Inorganic zinc salts like zinc sulphate (ZnSO4.7H2O) are prone to soil fixation, adsorption on calcium carbonate, and precipitation at high soil pH.
Synthetic chelates (such as Zn-EDTA) sequester Zn(2+) inside an organic ring, protecting it against precipitation and chemical fixation in alkaline or calcareous soils.
Consequently, at equal application rates of elemental zinc, Zn chelates maintain significantly higher bioavailability, mobility, and plant uptake efficiency than inorganic sources (requiring only 1/5th to 1/10th the dose).
Chelates are chemically synthesized and expensive, making Statement 4 incorrect, whereas Statement 3 is fully accurate.

Hence, Zn chelates are more effective than inorganic Zn at similar application rates (Option 3).

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

Which of the following weed is considered noxious?

noxious weed is defined as a weed that is legally designated as undesirable, troublesome, difficult to control, and exceptionally injurious to agriculture, livestock, or human health.
Parthenium hysterophorus (carrot grass / congress grass) is a notoriously invasive alien weed in India containing the sesquiterpene lactone toxin parthenin.
Parthenin causes contact dermatitis, asthma, and allergic rhinitis in humans, as well as toxicity in grazing cattle and allelopathic suppression of native crops.
Chenopodium album, Amaranthus viridis, and Boerhavia diffusa are common arable weeds, often utilized as leafy greens, and are not classified as noxious invasive hazards.

Hence, the noxious weed is Parthenium hysterophorus (Option 4).
