Axillary sclerites form points of attachment for muscles that control the -

The wing base articulates with the thoracic notum through a flexible membranous area containing small articular cuticular plates known as axillary sclerites (typically 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and sometimes 4th axillaries).
The third axillary sclerite (3Ax) serves as the specific point of insertion for the direct wing flexor muscle.
Contraction of this muscle pivots the 3Ax sclerite, allowing Neopterous insects to fold and flex their wings flat over the abdomen at rest.
They do not control antennae, legs, or mouthparts, which have their own intrinsic cervical and pleuro-coxal musculature.

Hence, axillary sclerites control the Wings (Option 2).

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

Which of the following enters the Krebs cycle?

Malate मैलेट Acetyl CoA एसिटाइल कोएंजाइम ए Oxaloacetate ऑक्सालोएसिटेट None of these इनमें से कोई नहीं

In aerobic cellular metabolism, pyruvate generated from glycolysis undergoes oxidative decarboxylation in the mitochondrial matrix to form two-carbon Acetyl Coenzyme A (Acetyl CoA).
Acetyl CoA is the essential substrate that physically enters the Krebs cycle (citric acid cycle / TCA cycle) by condensing with four-carbon oxaloacetate to form six-carbon citrate, catalyzed by citrate synthase.
Oxaloacetate, malate, succinate, and fumarate are regenerated internal intermediates already cycling within the pathway, not the entering substrate.
Flight muscles of insects exhibit extremely high rates of Acetyl CoA oxidation to sustain energetic wing beats.

Hence, Acetyl CoA enters the Krebs cycle (Option 2).

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

which of the following insects are spiracles absent?

The insect tracheal system is classified based on functional spiracles into holopneustic, peripneustic, amphipneustic, metapneustic, and apneustic.
In the apneustic condition, all spiracles are completely absent or closed, and gaseous exchange occurs via cutaneous diffusion or tracheal gills across the thin body wall.
Aquatic larvae of Chironomidae (non-biting midges or bloodworms) live buried in bottom mud of freshwaters, lack spiracles entirely (apneustic), and possess haemoglobin dissolved in their haemolymph to extract dissolved oxygen in hypoxic conditions.
Cecidomyiid and Mycetophilid larvae are terrestrial and possess functional peripneustic spiracles.

Hence, spiracles are absent in Chironomid larvae (Option 2).
