According to W.L. Johannsen's classical pure-line theory (1903), the descendants/progeny of a single, self-fertilized, completely homozygous individual constitute a 'Pure line'.
- Pure line: Defined strictly as the progeny of a single homozygous, self-pollinated crop plant.
- Inbred line: Developed through artificial repeated selfing in naturally cross-pollinated species.
- Multi line: Mixture of pure lines that are phenotypically similar but differ in disease resistance genes.
- Isogenic line: Lines identical in genetic background except at a single target locus.
