MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

What has historically been the main approach for long-range weather prediction in India?

Long-Range Forecasts (LRF) of the Indian summer monsoon were initiated by H.F. Blanford in 1886 and established systematically by Sir Gilbert Walker in 1906.
Walker identified teleconnections and developed empirical statistical regression models utilizing global and regional predictors.
For over a century, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) historically relied on multi-variate statistical ensemble models as the primary operational approach for seasonal monsoon rainfall predictions.
While dynamical coupled ocean-atmosphere models (like CFSv2 under the Monsoon Mission) have gained prominence recently, statistical methods historically formed the backbone of India's long-range forecasting.

Hence, the correct answer is Statistical method (Option 4).
