- Mature larvae march gregariously in vast armies across soil surfaces from one field to another, defoliating entire crops.
- standard physical mechanical control method is digging steep-sided trenches ($30\text{ cm}$ wide and $30\text{ cm}$ deep) around the perimeter of the crop field and dusting the bottom with an insecticide (e.g. methyl parathion or quinalphos dust).
- Crawling caterpillars fall into the trench, cannot climb the vertical loose earthen walls, and are killed, protecting the main crop.

- खाई के तल में कीटनाशी पाउडर बुरक दिया जाता है। रेंगती हुई लटें खाई में गिर जाती हैं और खड़ी दीवारों के कारण बाहर नहीं निकल पातीं तथा वहीं नष्ट हो जाती हैं।
- अतः कातरा के आक्रमण को 'खेत के चारों ओर खाई खोदकर' रोका जाता है (विकल्प 2)।
