- Early blight of potato is incited by the fungus Alternaria solani, producing concentric ring (target board) lesions on foliage.
- Brown rot of potato (bacterial wilt) is caused by Ralstonia solanacearum, and rice blast is caused by Magnaporthe oryzae (responsible for the Bengal Famine of 1943 was actually brown spot caused by Bipolaris oryzae).
- सन् 1845-46 का कुख्यात 'आयरिश अकाल' (Irish Potato Famine) आलू की पछेती अंगमारी (Late blight of potato) रोग के व्यापक प्रकोप के कारण पड़ा था, जिसका कारक कवकनुमा जीव 'फाइटोफ्थोरा इन्फेस्टान्स' (Phytophthora infestans) है।
- इस महामारी से आयरलैंड की पूरी आलू फसल नष्ट हो गई थी, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप लगभग 10 लाख से अधिक लोग भुखमरी से मारे गए तथा 15 लाख लोगों को देश छोड़ना पड़ा; इसी घटना के पश्चात एंटोन डी बेरी ने पादप रोग विज्ञान की नींव रखी।
- आलू की अगेती अंगमारी (Early blight) रोग आल्टरनेरिया सोलेनाई (Alternaria solani) कवक के कारण होता है, जिसमें पत्तियों पर संकेन्द्री वलय (target board) बनते हैं।
- आलू का भूरा विगलन (Brown rot) राल्सटोनिया सोलेनेसिएरम जीवाणु द्वारा तथा चावल का प्रध्वंश (Blast) रोग मैग्नापोर्थे ओराइजी कवक द्वारा होता है।
