Dehorning (disbudding) of calves is the removal or destruction of the horn bud at an early age (within 1 to 2 weeks after birth) before the horn bud attaches to the frontal bone of the skull.
Chemical disbudding is performed using caustic sticks of Potassium Hydroxide (Caustic Potash / $KOH$) or Sodium Hydroxide (Caustic Soda / $NaOH$).
The hair around the horn bud is clipped, petroleum jelly is applied around the perimeter to protect eyes and skin, and the caustic stick is rubbed firmly over the bud until the epidermal tissue is cauterized.
Electrical dehorner is also used, but chemically, Caustic Soda/Potash (Option 2) is the standard agent.
