A selectable marker in a cloning vector helps in identifying and eliminating non-transformants and selectively permitting the growth of transformants. Furthermore, through insertional inactivation of one of the antibiotic resistance genes (e.g. $amp^R$ or $tet^R$ in pBR322), it enables the differentiation and selection of recombinant cells from non-recombinant cells.
Note: NTA recognized Option 1 (and Option 2) in the official scoring key.
