Water erosion by rainfall and surface runoff progresses through five distinct morphological stages:

  • Splash erosion: Detachment of soil particles caused by the kinetic impact of falling raindrops.
  • Sheet erosion: Uniform removal of thin layers of topsoil across the field by unchannelized overland runoff.
  • Rill erosion: Incipient channelized flow forming micro-channels (rills) that can easily be smoothed out by normal tillage.
  • Gully erosion: Advanced channels that are too large and deep to be obliterated by normal tillage equipment.
  • Ravine formation: Severe, extensive, mature networks of deep gullies (badland topography, such as the Chambal ravines).

जल अपरदन का क्रमिक विकास निम्नलिखित 5 चरणों में होता है:

  • बौछार अपरदन (Splash erosion): गिरती वर्षा की बूंदों के आघात से मृदा कणों का छिटकना व उखड़ना।
  • परत अपरदन (Sheet erosion): अपवाह जल द्वारा खेत की ऊपरी उपजाऊ सतह से मृदा की एक समान पतली परत का बह जाना (किसानों की अदृश्य मृत्यु)।
  • रिल अपरदन (Rill erosion): बहते पानी द्वारा छोटी-छोटी उथली नालियाँ बन जाना जिन्हें सामान्य जुताई द्वारा सुधारा जा सकता है।
  • गली अपरदन (Gully erosion): रिलों का गहरा व चौड़ा होकर विकराल अवनलिका बन जाना जिन्हें सामान्य जुताई से नहीं भरा जा सकता।
  • बीहड़ (Ravine): अवनलिकाओं का अत्यधिक गहरा, संजालबद्ध और विशाल रूप (जैसे चंबल के बीहड़)।
