Assertion & Reason

Given below are two statements, one is labelled as Assertion (A) and other one labelled as Reason (R).

Assertion (A) : The probability of a sure event is 1.
Reason (R) : Let E be an event. Then 0 <= P(E) <= 1.

In light of the above statements, choose the correct answer from the options given below.
1. Both (A) and (R) are true and (R) is the correct explanation of (A).
2. Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A).
3. (A) is true but (R) is false.
4. (A) is false but (R) is true.

Axiomatic Probability Analysis:

  • Assertion (A) is True: By Kolmogorov's Second Axiom of Probability, the probability of the entire sample space $S$ (a sure or certain event) is $P(S) = 1$.
  • Reason (R) is True: By Kolmogorov's First Axiom, for any arbitrary event $E$, $0 \le P(E) \le 1$.
  • Causal Explanation: The fact that all probabilities are bounded in $[0, 1]$ (Reason R) establishes the general scale of probability, but the reason $P(\text{sure event}) = 1$ is that the sure event encompasses all favorable outcomes of the sample space ($n(E) = n(S) \implies P(E) = n(S)/n(S) = 1$). Thus, (R) is a valid independent axiom/property but does not provide the causal reason for (A).
Therefore, Both (A) and (R) are true but (R) is NOT the correct explanation of (A) (Option 2).

(Axioms of Probability):
