Forestry- ICAR JRF/SRF 2024

• Statement (I) is Incorrect: In forest tree breeding, genetic gain ($\Delta G$) obtained from Seed Production Areas (SPAs, phenotypically thinned natural stands) is modest (typically $3-8\%$), whereas Seed Orchards (Clonal Seed Orchards, CSOs, or Seedling Seed Orchards, SSOs) established from rigorously progeny-tested plus trees yield substantially higher genetic gain ($15-30\%$).
• Statement (II) is Incorrect: Second-generation seed orchards capture cumulative additive genetic variance through recurrent selection, achieving significantly higher genetic gains than first-generation seed orchards.
• Conclusion: Both Statement (I) and Statement (II) are incorrect (Option 2).

Correct option: (2) Both Statement (I) and Statement (Il) are incorrect

• Tested Seed Orchard (TSO) / Advanced Generation Orchard:
• seed orchard established using selected parent clones or families that have been evaluated and genetically verified through rigorous progeny testing.
• Also termed a Tested Seed Orchard or 1.5/2nd generation seed orchard, providing proven genetic gain. (Correct answer: Option 4)

• Genetic Load (H.J. Muller, 1950):
• The relative reduction in average fitness of a natural biological population compared to an idealized population of optimum genotype.
• Caused by the continuous persistence of deleterious, rare recessive alleles maintained by mutation-selection balance or heterozygote advantage. (Correct answer: Option 1)

• Effects (Clonal / Condition Effects):
• Phenotypic variations observed in vegetative propagules attributable to non-genetic environmental conditioning of the donor stock plant.
• Periphysis: Specifically describes phenotypic modifications in vegetative cuttings induced by the external physical, climatic, or nutritional environment of the donor mother tree.
• Topophysis relates to shoot position, and Cyclophysis relates to meristem ontogenetic age. (Correct answer: Option 3)
