Q.5

ICAR 2023Shift 1 MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

Weed seed dispersal by ants is called as :

Myrmecochory: The specialized dispersal of plant seeds by ants (Myrmex = ant, chory = dispersal). Seeds of myrmecochorous weeds possess nutrient-rich, lipid-dense appendages called elaiosomes that attract ants, which carry seeds to their nests, consume the elaiosome, and discard the intact seed underground.
Exozoochory refers to seeds hitchhiking on the external bodies/fur of animals (e.g. Xanthium burrs).
Autochory is self-dispersal via explosive pod dehiscence (e.g. Oxalis, Impatiens).
Thus, seed dispersal by ants is called Myrmecochory, confirming Option 3.
