Q.10
ICAR 2023Shift 1 Statement Based +4 −1

Given below are two statements

Statement (I) : Propagative viruses cannot multiply in their respective vectors.
Statement (II) : Non persistent viruses are generally stylet borne.

In light of the above statements, choose the most appropriate answer from the options given below:

Virus transmission mechanisms in entomology:

  • Statement (I) is incorrect: By definition, propagative viruses are those that actively infect and multiply / replicate within the tissues, hemolymph, and salivary glands of their insect vectors (e.g. Potato yellow dwarf virus, Tomato spotted wilt virus in thrips, Rice ragged stunt virus in planthoppers).
  • Statement (II) is correct: Non-persistent viruses (e.g. Cucumber mosaic virus, Potato virus Y) are acquired and inoculated within seconds to minutes without a latent period because they adhere specifically to the cuticular lining of the insect mouthparts (stylet-borne).
Hence, Statement (I) is incorrect but Statement (II) is correct.
