Mass selection combined with a numerical check-tree / comparison-tree grading system is the standard, most practical and scientifically robust method for plus-tree selection.
Candidate trees are scored across multiple silvicultural traits (height, diameter, volume, bole straightness, branch angle, pruning, wood density) against the 4 to 5 nearest dominant check trees within the same even-aged stand to eliminate environmental and micro-site bias.
