Harold Henry Flor (1942, 1956) formulated the 'Gene-for-Gene' hypothesis through his classical inheritance studies of flax (Linum usitatissimum) and flax rust (Melampsora lini), which is an obligate biotrophic fungus.
The hypothesis states: For each gene determining resistance in the host, there is a corresponding specific gene determining avirulence/virulence in the pathogen. This tight gene-for-gene recognition and hypersensitive response ($HR$) is classical and most pronounced in biotrophic plant-pathogen interactions.
