In rural sociology, leaders are classified based on the origin of their authority:
Traditional Leader: Derives authority and social influence from hereditary status, traditional customs, aristocratic lineage, large land ownership, and family wealth (e.g. village headmen, landlords, hereditary caste elders).
Democratic Leader: Derives authority from consensus, group participation, and collective choice of followers.
Autocratic Leader: Imposes decisions through coercive power and centralized control.
Emergent Leader: Emerges naturally in response to a specific crisis or evolving situational need.
