A potometer (such as Ganong's potometer or Farmer's potometer) is an apparatus used to measure the rate of transpiration indirectly by measuring the rate of water absorption. The underlying working principle is that under steady conditions, the rate/amount of water absorbed by a leafy shoot is virtually equal to (the same as) the amount of water lost through transpiration (since less than 1-2% of absorbed water is retained for metabolic processes).
