During facial embryogenesis, the upper lip and primary palate form through the fusion of the maxillary process with the medial nasal (nasomedial) process. Failure of fusion between these two prominences results in cheiloschisis or cleft lip (harelip). Failure of fusion between the lateral palatine processes (secondary palate) produces palatoschisis or cleft palate.
