In the Opisthorhynchous (or opisthognathous) head condition, typical of true bugs and homopterans (Hemiptera), the head is deflexed backward so that the piercing-sucking beak (proboscis/rostrum) projects posteroventrally along the venter between the front coxae.
- Prognathous: Head directed horizontally forward (e.g. ground beetles, termites).
- Hypognathous: Head directed vertically downward at a right angle to body axis (e.g. grasshopper, cockroach).
- Opisthorhynchous: Sucking mouthparts with beak directed backward between the anterior legs (e.g. bugs, cicadas, aphids).
- Both (1) & (3): Incorrect combination.
