MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

Which states receive the lowest annual rainfall from South-West monsoon?

Rajasthan and Gujarat राजस्थान एवं गुजरात Maharashtra and Karnataka महाराष्ट्र एवं कर्नाटक Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir तमिलनाडु एवं जम्मू और कश्मीर Punjab and Haryana पंजाब एवं हरियाणा

India receives over 75% of its total annual precipitation from the South-West (SW) monsoon during June to September.
However, Tamil Nadu lies parallel to the Bay of Bengal branch and in the rain-shadow region of the Western Ghats for the Arabian Sea branch, receiving only about 35% of its rain from the SW monsoon (receiving bulk rainfall from the North-East retreating monsoon).
Jammu & Kashmir receives only a modest fraction of precipitation from the SW monsoon because monsoon currents weaken before reaching the deep trans-Himalayan valleys, and it depends primarily on winter Western Disturbances.
In contrast, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Punjab, and Maharashtra receive the vast majority (85-95%) of their total annual rainfall specifically from the SW monsoon.

Hence, the correct answer is Tamil Nadu and Jammu & Kashmir (Option 3).

Q.2

RPSC Agriculture Research Officer (Agronomy) - 2024 (Q.65)

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

Majority of rainfall in India is received during -

India's macroclimate and agrarian calendar are governed by the South-West (SW) summer monsoon spanning June to September.
The SW monsoon delivers approximately 75% to 80% of India's total annual precipitation (amounting to ~890 mm out of the total ~1190 mm annual mean).
The North-East (retreating) monsoon provides about 11-15% of annual rainfall, focused mainly in the southeastern coastal region (Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh).
Hence, the overwhelming majority of rainfall is received during the South-West monsoon period.

Hence, the correct answer is South-West monsoon period (Option 3).

Q.3

RPSC Agriculture Research Officer (Agronomy) - 2022 (Q.57)

MCQ (Single Correct) +1 −0.33

In Rajasthan, what is correct in respect of south west monsoon?

Normally it covers whole Rajasthan by first fortnight of May Normally it withdrawn from whole Rajasthan by end of August Normally it covers whole Rajasthan by first fortnight of July Normally it withdrawn from whole Rajasthan by end of November

The southwest monsoon enters southern Rajasthan in late June and normally covers the entire state by the first fortnight of July (July 10-15).

Normally it covers whole Rajasthan by first fortnight of May: May is peak summer before monsoon arrival.
Normally it withdrawn from whole Rajasthan by end of August: Rainfall extends through September.
Normally it covers whole Rajasthan by first fortnight of July: Climatologically accurate normal date for complete monsoon coverage across western Rajasthan.
Normally it withdrawn from whole Rajasthan by end of November: Withdrawal concludes by late September/October.

Hence, the correct option is (C).
