The name Isoptera is derived from Greek 'iso' (equal) and 'ptera' (wings), because the reproductive alates of termites possess forewings and hindwings that are identical in size, shape, and delicate reticulate venation.
- Homoptera: Forewings are uniform in texture throughout, but differ significantly in shape and size from the hindwings.
- Isoptera: True equal-winged insects (termites) having both pairs of wings completely identical.
- Neuroptera: Lacewings have large reticulate wings, but fore and hind pairs differ in outline.
- Hymenoptera: Hindwings are considerably smaller than forewings and hooked together by hamuli.
