MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

The first notification of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in India came in the year:

$1986$ $1986$ $1994$ $1994$ $1974$ $1974$ $2006$ $2006$

In India, the first comprehensive statutory notification mandating Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for developmental and industrial projects was promulgated on 27 January 1994 by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) under Section 3 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. This notification made environmental clearance mandatory for 29 designated project categories, and was later comprehensively revised in 2006.

Option analysis:

$1986$: Enactment year of the overarching Environment (Protection) Act.
$1994$: Correct, year of the first formal statutory EIA notification in India.
$1974$: Enactment year of the Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act.
$2006$: Year of the revised/second major EIA notification.

Q.7

ICAR AIEEA PG Fisheries Science 14 July 2023 Shift-1 Paper (Q.55)

MCQ (Single Correct) +4 −1

Species that serve as early warnings of environmental damage are called:

Indicator species (bioindicators) are organisms whose presence, absence, abundance, or physiological health reflects the overall environmental condition and health of an ecosystem. Because of their high sensitivity to physical, chemical, or biological alterations, they serve as early warning sentinels of environmental pollution or degradation (e.g. mayfly larvae in pristine waters, lichens for air quality, Tubifex in organic pollution).

Option analysis:

Keystone species: Species whose presence plays a disproportionate role in determining community structure (e.g. sea otters).
Native species: Organisms normally living and thriving in a particular ecosystem naturally.
Specialist species: Species with narrow ecological niches or food requirements.
Indicator species: Correct, biological sentinels signaling environmental change.
